Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
