Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
