Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
